Fire Officer I

Description

This course addresses all of the job performance requirements found in Chapter 4 of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. The course consists of five modules that can be taken in any order: Leadership and Supervision (15 hours), Company Training & Community Risk Reduction (12 hours), Firefighter Health and Safety (12 hours), Planning and Emergency Response (9 hours), and Fireground Strategy and Tactics for First Arriving Companies (15 hours). Topics include assuming the role of company officer, fire department organization, leadership, supervision, communications, building construction, pre-incident planning, company level training, scene size-up, engine company operations, truck company operations, and response to non-fire emergencies. All five modules must be completed within 2 years of the start date of the first module. *NOTE: Students who completed SCFA’s Introduction to Fire Officer in or prior to 2023 will receive NYS equivalency for the Leadership and Supervision module; Students who completed SCFA’s Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations (STICO) will receive equivalency for the Fireground Strategy and Tactics for First Arriving Companies module. In these instances, only the remaining modules must be taken to complete Fire Officer I.

Course Length: 63 Hours
Prerequisite: A minimum of 2 years of service following completion of Firefighter I or Basic Firefighter Training or Essentials of Firefighting or Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations with HMFRO, and Engine Company Operations or Ladder Company Operations, and authorization to attend from student’s department Chief.
Certificate: NYS, College Accredited.
